Type your Anki reviews

Anki decides which card you should see next; this site turns answering it into typing. Instead of thinking “yes, I knew that” and pressing a grade button, you type the answer in kana — with the JIS kana layout or romaji — and the grade comes from how the typing went. It is stricter than self-grading and doubles as Japanese keyboard practice.

How grading works

• Good — you typed the card without a wrong key and without peeking.
• Hard — you hit a wrong key somewhere but finished on your own.
• Again — you revealed the answer. The card comes back later in the session.

Grades go straight into Anki's scheduler, so your intervals stay correct everywhere. Cards come up in Anki's own study order, and the session shows how many cards are left.

What each card asks for

• Reading cards — the word (kanji shown when the note has it) with the meaning; type the reading.
• Cloze cards — the sentence with a blank; type what fills it.
• Audio cards — the card's recording plays and you type what you hear.
• Meaning cards — the English side is shown; type the Japanese from memory.
• Cards with nothing typeable can be skipped for today (buried, exactly like Anki's bury).

Cards without an example sentence get one written automatically and saved to the note, so every word is met inside a sentence. An optional Sentence after words setting chains the full example sentence after each word. When a card has a recording, it plays; otherwise the browser's Japanese voice reads the answer after you type it.

On a phone, without desktop Anki

Sync Anki to kanatyping.com once (it takes the place of AnkiWeb as the sync server), and the deck can be reviewed from any browser — computer or phone — with Anki closed. Grades sync back to your other devices the next time they sync. If you prefer, desktop Anki can instead stay open with the AnkiConnect add-on and nothing is uploaded anywhere.
